FRANCESCO MARZOLA | COMPOSER

The Old & The New

Soundtrack Concept & Commentary

At the edge of the world's end, The Old & The New explores a profoundly human response to the inevitable. When the protagonist receives news of the apocalypse, he chooses creation over despair, seeking to leave a mark through a final poem.

01. Announce

Establishing the theme of collapse. The organ provides an epic presence, while a heavy descending bass line—complemented by the Cello playing the melody—serves as a musical translation of the inevitable end.

02. Party Till The End

The landscape shifts toward chaos. The trumpet sheds its heroic potential for a sense of frantic urgency, while the cello utilizes an "up and down" motion, mirroring a world between celebration and violence.

03. The Poem Sinks

The piano provides intimacy. The muted trumpet opens with a leap of a 5th—a heroic interval subverted by timbre. It represents an "inner hero" whose efforts eventually sink amidst the discord.

04. The Phone Call

The trumpet and cello carry the weight of despair. A final connection: calling someone you love for last words. The trumpet takes on the "up and down" movement while the cello repeats a steady, haunting pattern.

05. The End

As the journey concludes, grandiose elements fade. Only the piano is left with a delay effect—a symbol of our remaining memories echoing quietly before the final end.
